What is the Error Log
The View Error Log function will allow you to see the last 300 errors that occurred when visitors tried to access your web site. This function is very useful when tracking down problems with your site. For example, if you go to a page on your site and receive an error, you will want to check the error log to see more information about what went wrong. It is also helpful to submit the error along with any support request you may open that is related to that page.
An Example Log Entry
[Fri May 19 23:00:49 2006] [error] [client 17.18.19.20] File does not exist: /home/username/public_html/images/imagename.gif
Each error log entry will start with a timestamp that shows the date and time the error occurred. Then, it will show [error]. The next entry will be the location of the client (the IP of the person trying to access the file on your site). And finally, the error.
In this case, a client from the IP address 17.18.9.20 was trying to access /home/username/public_html/images/imagename.gif which is an image file that does not exist. While this does not give you a specific way to see how the client got to imagename.gif, it can be very helpful in catching spelling errors in your links to pages and images.
